How do I switch the Information Commons computer from Mac operating system to Windows?

Most iMacs in the Information Commons area on Level 1 offer a choice of operating systems, Windows or Mac. Some computers have specialized software (CFA computers, scanner computers) and offer only one operating system option.

To choose another operating system, first restart the computer.

  • To restart from the Mac operating system, go to the Apple icon in the upper left corner and hit "Restart." If that fails, you can press and hold down the Power button (located at the bottom left corner behind the screen).
  • To restart while in the Windows operating system, click on the "Start" button, then select the arrow next to "Shut Down", and select "Restart".

Once the computer has restarted, you will have the option to choose your preferred operating system by using the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Once you have chosen an operating system, you will need to log into the computer. If you are a visitor, faculty, or staff member using the Windows operating system, you will need to add a prefix before your username. See "How do I log in to this computer" for instructions.
