How do I connect my laptop to the TV in a Group Study room?
Please do not touch buttons on the TV or the cables attached to the TV without assistance from a staff member. Connections for your use are available in the wall or the floorbox, depending on the room.
Standard (302, 314, 315 only) / Group Presentation (104-106) / Media Group Study Rooms (217-222):
In standard and presentation group study rooms, there is a box with a VGA connector in the floor. You'll need to check out a VGA cable from Circulation and plug it into the connection in the floor. In Media Viewing Rooms, VGA cables may be located with the video equipment. Media Listening Rooms do not have an LCD screen.
PC users can connect the VGA cable (checked out from Circulation) from the floorbox to their computer. If your computer does not have a VGA connection (some newer PC laptops don't), you'll need to use an Easy Display room and an HDMI cable instead.
Once you plug in your computer, you may need to change some settings in Display (under Control Panel) before your screen displays. Check the instructions under the LCD
MAC users need an adapter to connect to the VGA cable in the floor panel. These are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Please use the list below to ask at the desk for the corresponding adapter:
A: DVI to VGA (older Macbook Pros – silver)
B: Micro-DVI to VGA (Macbook Air)
C: Mini Display Port to VGA (current Macbook and Macbook Pro models - aluminum)
D: Mini-DVI to VGA (white Macbooks)
Once you plug in your computer, you may need to change some settings in Display (under System Preferences) before your screen displays. Check the instructions under the LCD (or select the appropriate PDF link below) for more help.
Easy Display Rooms (Level 2 rooms):
PC users will need to determine if their computer can plug into a VGA cable or an HDMI cable. (Most laptops will have a VGA port, some newer laptops only have an HDMI port.) See the picture below or the switch on the wall in the room to see what the port should look like on your laptop. Choose the one that matches your laptop, and ask at the Circulation desk for that cable (VGA or HDMI). PC users only need a cable.
Once you have the cable, plug the cable into your laptop and the wall.
You may need to check your Display settings in the Control Panel to finish displaying your screen on the LCD - see the instructions hanging on the LCD (or PDF link below) for more information.
MAC users need both a cable and an adapter. The library has more adapters for the VGA cable (see alphabetical list above in "all group study rooms"). If you have a newer Mac/Macbook Pro that has a MiniDisplay Port, you can choose whether you prefer a VGA or HDMI cable and adapter. Ask for the adapter that fits your Mac, and the matching cable for that adapter.
VGA adapters:
(see list above in "all group study rooms")
HDMI adapter:
MiniDisplayPort to HDMI (newer Macbook and Macbook Pros- aluminum)
Once you have the adapter and cable, plug the cable into the wall, the adapter onto the cable, and plug the adapter in to your laptop.
You may need to set up your Display settings through System Preferences before you are displaying your screen on the LCD - see the instructions hanging under the television for more help, or the PDF link below.
